Contamination Control 3 – Water
Contamination Control 3 – Water provides a detailed exploration of how water contamination affects lubricating systems, and how to identify, classify, and mitigate it. Water is one of the most common and destructive contaminants in industrial lubricants. It causes rust, depletes additives, promotes oxidation, and can severely reduce equipment life.
This course is designed for those who want to go beyond symptom-based troubleshooting and build a strong technical foundation around water in oil. You’ll learn about the different forms water takes in lubricants (dissolved, emulsified, and free), how it interacts with different base oil types, and the implications of miscibility and demulsibility. You’ll also become familiar with key water measurement techniques like Karl Fischer titration and crackle tests, so you can accurately quantify contamination and monitor trends.
By the end of this course, you’ll be able to:
- Identify where water contamination originates in industrial systems
- Understand the physical and chemical behaviour of water in lubricants
- Differentiate between miscible and immiscible water interactions
- Measure water content using appropriate field and lab methods
- Apply strategies to reduce, separate, and control water in oil systems
