Contamination Control 1A – Storage & Handling

Mask-Group-8@2x.png
Storage and handling is one of THE most important aspects of lubrication. You can purchase the best lubricants and the highest price, from the most reputable supplier – but if contaminated during storage and transfer, all of the benefits you might have accrued will evaporate. In this course, we will look at practical procedures for receiving, storing and dispensing lubricants and greases, and the nuances around different packaging types.

Engines 4 – Gas Engine Lubrication

Mask-Group-8@2x.png
A course by Rafe Britton
Stationary gas engines have become an essential part of the power generation business. Flexible, often skid mounted and fast to start up, they are an easy way for remote areas to obtain power and can often operate at higher efficiencies that their diesel generator counterparts. They also see significant use in the gas transmission business, where the availability of natural gas makes them a great choice to power compression stations. As the world’s energy mix evolves, it is likely that reciprocating gas engines will continue to play an important part in power generation with alternative fuels like hydrogen, ammonia and biogases. In this course we will look at the special requirements of gas engine oils, how the gas composition affects performance, and the different lubrication systems.

Fundamentals 3 – Lubricant Application Methods

Mask-Group-8@2x.png
A course by Rafe Britton
Choosing a great lubricant is fine and dandy, but the rubber doesn’t hit the road until you actually need to apply the lubricant to the machine. There’s so many different ways to do this – each with pros and cons. In this course we will take a look at the main application methods including manual, gravity-based feed systems, lifting, spray, mist, circulating, and automated.

Oil Analysis 5 – Oil Sampling

Mask-Group-8@2x.png
A course by Rafe Britton
Oil sampling is the backbone of oil analysis. This is where you can truly make or break the quality of your condition monitoring program. The basic idea? You’re trying to obtain the right data, from the right equipment, in the right location, at the right time. But that’s easier said than done. In this course we will examine what makes a good oil sample, and how to take an oil sample that will maximise the data insights.

Gears 3 – Open Gear Lubricants

Mask-Group-8@2x.png
A course by Rafe Britton
Open gear lubricants are common across a large number of industries including mining, power generation and cement. What is unique about open gears is that the sheer size and power transfer require the use of very high viscosity oils that cannot be accommodated by regular mineral base oil lubricants. In this course we will look at the requirements and operation of open gear sets, and how this drives formulation of the open gear lubricants (and greases).

Fundamentals 1B – Maintenance Strategies

Mask-Group-8@2x.png
A course by Rafe Britton
Maintenance varies at businesses vary widely. But they can mostly be boiled down to four distinct philosophies:
  • Reactive
  • Preventative
  • Predictive
  • Proactive
There is no single “correct” way to do maintenance – in this course we will look at where you might employ each type, the factors that weigh on the decision, and how lubrication fits into this picture of maintenance and asset management.

Greases 1A – Thickeners

Mask-Group-8@2x.png
A course by Rafe Britton
The thickener is what makes grease, a grease. But as with additives and base oils, there is no “best” thickener, only a thickener most appropriate for the application. In this course we will investigate the thickeners that are commonly available and evaluate their strengths and weaknesses.

Fundamentals 1A – Frameworks for Understanding

Mask-Group-8@2x.png
A course by Rafe Britton
Once we have foundational knowledge about lubricants, their physical and chemical properties, what do we do with this information? It’s helpful to place this understanding into multiple frameworks that can be used to generalised to any application. In this course, we’ll take our foundational understanding of tribology, lubricant chemistry and mechanical systems; these will be weaved together in a practical example.
