Viscosity Selection for Spur, Bevel and Helical Gears
The calculator below is a guideline for the viscosity selection of lubricants for enclosed gear drives having spur, helical or bevel gears. These guidelines are per AGMA 9005. The viscosity selection must be complemented with an appropriate performance additive to provide a finished lubricant with properties sufficient to meet the overall needs of the application. If the operating bulk oil temperature is unknown, assume approximately 45°C above ambient conditions. In the case of multiple reduction gear drives, it is recommended to use the pitch line velocity for the lowest speed mesh.

The calculator below is a guideline for the viscosity selection of lubricants for enclosed gear drives having spur, helical or bevel gears. This calculator must be used i sequence (i.e. select pinion rpm range, then reduction ratio, then power) and the tool will filter down to the acceptable ISO VG’s for the application. Please note that for this calculator it is assumed the max oil temperature is 50°C.

AGMA - ISO Viscosity Grade Equivalence
The latest edition of AGMA 9005 has removed the old AGMA number series for classification of gear oils, in favour of the ISO VG scale. However, old documentation may still contain references to the AGMA number.
