Base Oils 3 – Synthetic Base Oils
Base Oils 3 – Synthetic Base Oils explores the major synthetic base oil chemistries used in high-performance lubricants. Unlike mineral oils, synthetic base stocks are engineered at the molecular level to deliver superior performance in extreme temperatures, high loads, and sensitive applications.
This course introduces the chemical structure, advantages, limitations, and typical uses of leading synthetic base oils, including polyalphaolefins (PAOs), dibasic and polyol esters, phosphate esters, polyalkylene glycols (PAGs), and alkylated naphthalenes (ANs). Each module breaks down how these fluids behave in terms of volatility, solvency, oxidation resistance, lubricity, and compatibility.
Whether you’re formulating lubricants for turbines, compressors, automotive engines, or specialty equipment, this course gives you the knowledge to choose the right synthetic base oil for the job—and explain your choice with confidence.
By completing this course, you’ll be able to:
- Differentiate between major synthetic base oil chemistries
- Understand the molecular structure and performance traits of each type
- Match synthetic base oils to application needs (e.g., high temp, biodegradability, water solubility)
- Evaluate trade-offs such as cost, compatibility, and fluid life
- Support formulation decisions with technical accuracy and insight
