Degradation 1 – Fundamentals
Lubricant degradation is a primary factor in oil performance decline, leading to increased wear, equipment failure, and unplanned downtime. Understanding the mechanisms of oil degradation is essential for maintaining machinery reliability, extending lubricant life, and optimizing maintenance strategies. This course provides a comprehensive framework for identifying, diagnosing, and preventing lubricant degradation in industrial applications.
Designed for lubrication technicians, reliability professionals, and maintenance personnel, this course delivers practical knowledge and best practices for mitigating oil degradation. Participants will gain insights into the chemical and physical processes that lead to oxidation, nitration, thermal failure, additive depletion, electrostatic discharge (ESD), and varnish formation. They will also learn strategies for extending lubricant life and ensuring optimal equipment performance.
Course Modules:
Degradation 01 00 – Introduction
Gain an overview of lubricant degradation, its role in machinery reliability, and the key factors that influence oil breakdown.
Degradation 01 01 – Oxidation
Understand how oxidation occurs, the chemical reactions involved, and the impact on lubricant properties such as viscosity and acidity. Learn preventive measures, including antioxidant additives and temperature control.
Degradation 01 02 – Nitration
Explore the effects of nitrogen-based compounds on oil stability, the formation of harmful byproducts, and how nitration differs from oxidation. Learn strategies to minimize nitration in combustion environments.
Degradation 01 03 – Thermal Failure
Discover how extreme heat leads to oil degradation without oxygen exposure, resulting in carbon deposits and coke formation. Learn how to manage and control heat-induced lubricant breakdown.
Degradation 01 04 – Additive Depletion
Examine the role of additives in oil performance, how they degrade over time, and the impact of depletion on lubricant functionality. Learn methods for monitoring additive health and extending oil service life.
Degradation 01 05 – Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)
Understand how electrostatic charge buildup in lubrication systems can cause microscopic oil breakdown. Learn about common causes of ESD and best practices to prevent damage, including filtration and system design adjustments.
Degradation 01 06 – Varnish & Sludge
Learn about the formation of varnish and sludge due to oil degradation, their impact on system efficiency, and best practices for prevention and removal.
Key Learning Outcomes:
Recognize the key mechanisms of lubricant degradation and their impact on equipment reliability.
Identify early warning signs of oil breakdown through oil analysis and condition monitoring.
Apply best practices to slow degradation and extend lubricant service life.
Develop proactive maintenance strategies to mitigate the risks of varnish, sludge, and deposit formation.
This course is ideal for maintenance professionals, lubrication technicians, and reliability engineers seeking to optimize lubrication management, improve equipment reliability, and reduce costs associated with premature oil failure.
